I am an avid reader. I devour books as much as my time can allow. I read them in all forms: physical books, e-books, and audio books. There is no method, or place, I will not use to get in as much reading as I can.
The more books a person reads, though, the more they can differentiate between a good writer and a really bad one; a well-written and thought out story vs. a sloppy and badly conveyed concept for a book. Of course, some opinions on certain books is formed solely on taste and preference. I would not read various books of a certain author/genre not because of bad writing but because their particular style I do not find interesting or what I believe enhances my perspective on life.
Despite my love that I have for immersing myself in a good book, there is one Book that not only I have read countless of times but thousands, millions, billions of people, all throughout time, have read as well. In the writings of Homer’s Iliad, you have heard the saying, “A face that launched a thousand ships”? Well, this Book I speak of has not only launched many events we have read in our history books, but it has also shaped history into what we find ourselves living in this very day.
This Book I speak of, The Holy Word of God, has not only shaped empires, nations, and governments on a grand scale but it also has shaped the hearts of individual men and women from times past to the here and now. In many countries, it is a forbidden book; a book prohibited by oppressive governments because it is deemed as dangerous. Not in the sense because it creates blood lust killing radicals, but because it teaches of a Higher Power, God the Most High, that rules over said authoritative regimes therefore diminishing its power over the people.
When I had my severe illness and laid helpless in a hospital bed, it did not matter how many good books I had read or however many were in my library. There was only One that I reached for because it gave me hope and strength for the dark time I found myself in. When it came down to it, it was really the only book that mattered; the only One that I desired. I have no doubt this is the sentiment many have felt all throughout history, up to this very day, and will continue to be until the end of time. It is the Book of Ages.
God, thank You for Your Word that You have given to all humanity. It is a powerful Book that speaks to the heart of us and speaks of The One who is above all authority; The only One whose name and Kingdom, even after each nation has risen and fallen, still remains.
32 “They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” – Luke 24:32
